How to Calculate Tile Quantity

When tiling a room, it's essential to buy enough material to cover the entire area plus a little extra for cuts and breakage. A standard rule of thumb is to add 10% for "waste." If you're laying tile in a complex pattern like herringbone, you might want to increase that to 15%.

Common Tile Sizes

  • Standard Floor: 12" x 12" or 18" x 18"
  • Subway Tile: 3" x 6"
  • Large Format: 12" x 24" or 24" x 24"
  • Plank Tile: 6" x 24" or 8" x 48"
