How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Mulch is usually sold by the cubic yard (bulk) or by the bag (typically 2 cubic feet). To calculate the volume, you need the area of your garden bed and the desired depth of the mulch layer. For most gardens, a depth of 3 inches is recommended for moisture retention and weed suppression.
Mulch Depth Recommendations
- New Beds: 3 - 4 inches
- Top-dressing: 1 - 2 inches
- Around Trees: 2 - 3 inches (keep away from trunk)
